Sườn rửa sạch chặt miếng vừa ăn. Cho sườn vào nồi với lượng nước xâm xấp mặt. Đun cho nồi sườn sôi khoảng 3 phút thì tắt bếp. Lấy sườn ra rửa sạch lại một lần nữa.
Cho 1 thìa dầu ăn vào nồi, thêm hành khô vào xào thơm, tiếp đó cho sườn vào đảo qua, thêm một ít hạt nêm, muối bột canh, mỳ chính vào đảo đều cho sườn ngấm gia vị. Sau đó cho lượng nước vừa ăn vào nồi sườn đun sôi rồi hạ nhỏ lửa.
Trong lúc ninh sườn, sơ chế các nguyên liệu còn lại. Cà rốt, khoai tây bào vỏ cắt miếng vừa ăn. Hạt sen tươi bóc bỏ vỏ và tâm sen (nếu bạn dùng hạt sen khô thì ngâm hạt sen qua đêm cho hạt sen nở ra).
Khi nồi sườn sôi được khoảng 15 phút thì cho khoai tây, hạt sen tươi, cà rốt vào đun chung. Bạn đun cho đến khi các nguyên liệu chín mềm là được. Nêm lại gia vị cho vừa ăn và thêm hành lá, rau mùi tàu vào rồi tắt bếp.
