Captain here, in 2015, Czech Republic started an EU-funded project south of Prague for 340 million $ that should end up being a CERN-like scientific base researching on biology, chemistry or astrophysics with teams from the US, India, EU, China or Russia. When it was started, they were expected to have a system of four lasers intensifying light ten times higher than existing systems by the end of 2017 (in the end, it seems there will be one in Czechia made with mainly the British and one in Romania made with mainly the French, the ELI (organisation founded for those projects) being based in Hungary, Czechia and Romania). The laser in Romania was built and tested in Paris by Thales before being shipped off (they're hopping it will be powerful enough to destroy nuclear waste)

Kind of a captain here. The numbers are impressive, but the reality is this: I don't know the specifications of the laser they are building, but with these high power research lasers, the power is high, but the energy is relatively low. Power is energy per time unit. So one watt is 1 joule per second. If I crate a laser pulse of 1 joule, which only lasts 0.000001 s (1 microsecond), the power would be 1 million watts. A megawatt laser! Sounds impressive eh? For comparison; if i want to bring a cup of cold tap water to a boil, it would require ~56500 joules. What if I just want to raise the temperature one degree Celsius? ~630 joules. Don't be blinded by how much power those lasers have. They are still impressive though.

That much power drawn will result in Europe sucking at the gas reservoirs in Russia directly. No need to pressurise the pipelines.
